SAN JOSE, Calif. – Pedro Carvalho has waited a long time to get his big opportunity, and he made the most of it on Saturday night.

The Straight Blast Gym Ireland product by way of Portugal got a spot in the 16-man Bellator featherweight grand prix tournament and he made the most of it, as he outmuscled and outgrappled veteran Sam Sicilia in an opening-round matchup on Saturday night.

Carvalho (11-3 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) earned the stoppage at the 1:56 mark of the second round to earn his sixth consecutive victory.

The opening round was a back-and-forth affair, with both competitors getting some shine on the ground. Sicilia (16-7 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) got top position and worked for a triangle. Carvalho, however, turned things around and got Sicilia into a tight choke.

It was Sicilia’s credit that he escaped, but that didn’t last long. In the second, Carvalho got the better of things in the standup by mixing in vicious body kicks with his punches. This time, Carvalho got a rear-naked choke from the bottom, and when he straightened Sicilia out, Sicilia immediately tapped, giving him his second loss in this past three fights.

The featherweight tournament opening-round bout was part of the Bellator 226 main card at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. The main card streamed on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.
